Fascinators                             22 August 09

I recently received this email from a delightful, long time client

"Dear Wendi,

Again, many thanks for my gorgeous headpiece, I will wear it with pride at my daughter's wedding. I've recommended you to a friend who wants a "fascinator" and I squealed when she said the "f " word ...as you know, most of them are not fascinating!. She needs educating!

What amazes me is they range from a bit of fluff on a comb from the $2 shop to a huge concoction of feathers.

The sad thing is that a cheap fascinator does absolutely nothing for the woman who is wearing it. They are usually worn upside down or on the back of the head and do nothing to frame the face or enhance the style of  the beautiful woman wearing it.

....much love Susan R - G ." Bowral NSW

Thank you Susan! In my 18 years of making hats, the word fascinator was never used until a few years ago. I  don't use the word, but for the purpose of this article I will.

Fascinators (Susan's words!) don't really do much at all - they are not an alternative to a small stylish hat or a fabulous, elegant large brimmed hat. Most fascinators are glued together and won't last long compared to a hat that has been made especially for you by a reputable milliner, to match your outfit, your shape and your style.

A well made hat can last you for years and can be re-styled every year with a different trim. Why not have a unique hat made?

Spring Fashion Trends 2009/10        1 October 2009

 by Isabelle Guaran

Full, feminine skirts, explosions of feathers and architectural shoulders are just a few of the exciting trends this Spring. Remember, the races are a chance to really let your inner child play dress-ups – experiment with colours, patterns and textures, like combining pink and royal blue or even hot pink and orange.

Millinery is experiencing a renaissance, from the Paris Haute Couture shows to the current 2010 Ready to Wear Collections, designers seem to feel that no outfit is complete without a gorgeous hat.

Of course, how better to make a statement than with one of Philadelphia Philpot’s creations atop your head?

When you start thinking about your outfit for race day, don’t forget that the hat is what catches people’s eye. People will always look at what’s on your head before they look at what’s just beneath it.

“Fashion fades, only style remains the same.” Coco Chanel

Philadelphia Philpot is offering a styling service for the first time this season – so if you need someone to discuss your sartorial vision with, she’s your woman!......Happy punting!

An alternative to a headpiece is a small hat that can be re-styled many times

  • 10  Hat & Styling Tips for the  Racing Season

  • 1. For the Spring Carnival we wear straw hats -  not felt please!

  • 2. Wear the hat towards the front of your head and slightly tilted. It's more alluring - MEN too!

  • 3. Keep the hat on all day...it is part of your whole look.

  • 4. Elegance is the key when dressing for the races. Wear appropriate attire - Please don't wear your nightclub dresses!.

  • 5. Strappy little dresses may not be great if the weather changes....take a shawl

  • 6. Your hat, your shoes and your handbag should match or compliment each other.

  • 7. Wear comfortable shoes - it's a long, fun day and you don't want shoes that hurt your feet....and please paint your toe nails if you are wearing open toe shoes!

  • 8. Please don't walk around with your shoes and your hat in your hand!...It's not a good look girls

  • 9. Make sure your handbag is big enough to hold your race book, your sunglasses and your make up....an emergency supply of bobby pins, safety pins and foot petals.

  • 10. Have something to eat before you start on the Champagne!

Have fun out at the racetrack !
