Moira the milliner … in 1945

My dearest and most cherished friend, Margie (Margaret) Page, who I have known since I was 11 years old, recently told me her mother was a milliner in 1945.
I have known her beautiful mother Moira, for just as long – She is the sweetest person you could ever meet.

From Margie– “Hi lovely Wendi!  My mum worked as a milliner for Stoddarts – located opposite QVB York Street, just after the war in 1945 where she made blocked straw and felt hats. Mum now 86 years of age, said she was quite skilled in ‘cornelli’ work on hats –  a stitching – lace feature across the band and crown of the hat. Stoddarts made mum a beautiful pink straw hat for a going away wedding present to take to Jervis Bay on her honeymoon. They also imported beautiful fabrics and made sample blouses with pin tucks, and coats for David Jones.”

Margie also sent me this delightful picture of Ellen O’Brien (her Auntie Pos on right). Her grandmother, Winifred Berthold, aged 49 and Mary Byrne on right, aged 36 years…wearing hats made by Moira

As a collector of all things vintage since I was very young, including beautiful vintage hats, I treasure these pictures from Moira.
