17 Dec Restoring an old felt hat that was discovered in a shed, in Queensland

Carlo arrived at my studio with a scruffy old Stetson felt hat which he had found in a Queensland shed …
Complete with a little bug hiding in a cocoon on the top of the hat!
It must have been dearly loved and well worn, as it was out of shape and coated with many years of
Queensland dust and dirt, which made it hard for me to determine its original colour.
The old hat lining and the inside & outside hat bands were rotten, dirty, and falling apart in my hands.

As I gently cleaned the hat,  the colour started to  reveal itself as a soft khaki green. As the felt on the inside of the hat was in much better condition than the outside, I turned the hat inside out, steamed it and blocked it into shape on my  beautiful old trilby hat block. With a new hat band and a bit more love….Voila!
When Carlo tried it on, he was so thrilled with what I had done…he got goose-pimples!
